So you are probably reading this because you are not sure what 1e100.net is or why you are being redirected via it when performing Google searches or using products such as youtube etc.

Perform a SiteWhois lookup

1e100.net is owned by Google and has been in use since October 2009, if you perform a whois on the domain you can see it’s registration details linked back to Google.

Perform an SiteInfo lookup

If you want to find out more information about the domain you can use our SiteInfo service we setup a few years ago over at hsmoore.com/siteinfo/.

By performing a SiteInfo lookup on google.com you can see that each time you run it the servername is different and by looking on the map below the lookup results that the location of that redirected server is in different places all the time, this is due to load balancing. Perform a SiteInfo lookup on google.com now to see for yourself!

Each time you query google.com you will be load balanced to one of the many servers around the world that are less busy to take your request, e.g. qw-in-f105.1e100.net or qw-in-f103.1e100.net or vx-in-f99.1e100.net etc.

The domain name

The domain name 1e100.net is actually a very “Googley” type name as it is scientific notation for 1 googol or 1 times 10 to the 100th power.

Why did they do this?

They did this to keep everything simpler, more secure and to protect against cross-site scripting attacks.

The Spanner Platform

Spanner is a platform that Google are now using to better automate moving replicas of data across their world-wide datacenters to help bandwidth, prevent packet loss and reduce system failures.

A Google employee said “..Google is intent on scaling Spanner to between one million and 10 million servers, encompassing 10 trillion (1013) directories and a quintillion (1018) bytes of storage. Imagine that. A single corporation housing an exabyte of the world’s data..”

If you have visited the Google.co.uk homepage (Yes, that’s Google UK) recently – since about the 8th of September 2010 then you would have noticed a new search feature Google is pushing called Google Instant.

Now what is so nice about Google Instant?

It is an ajax type search application that now searches using keyword ghosting and searches and returns results as you type to populate the normal search results page that has been used up until now.

You can enable it over here if it does not appear for you or you have mistakenly turned it off.

Also note that you will need to be signed into Google Accounts in order for this to work at the moment. This will probably become something that you won’t need a Google Accounts for once it becomes a default google feature used on all the worldwide homepages.

Now this is an annoying one.
You go to any of google’s sites including any site that has google-analytics.com javascript included in it’s body and BOOM! ..either you get redirected to a bullshit search page you didn’t ask to go to or the browser shows a blank white screen while apparently analytics loads..

It turns out this is actually a virus that infects routers!

There are “short-lived-ways” to solve this problem and the one I adopted was to add the following into a windows batch file and run it every bloody time just before doing a google search.

ipconfig /flushdns

For other platforms see here: http://www.techiecorner.com/35/how-to-flush-dns-cache-in-linux-windows-mac/

This will flush your local DNS cache and for a very short while allow you to do what you actually want to.

A lot of people who have experienced this problem say that you should simply update the firmware on your router (which does not always work).

If you login to your router’s control panel (usually http://192.168.0.1) and check under your DNS settings, you will see that the DNS IP addresses are not set to “automatic” and instead show 2 IP addresses:

213.109.65.40 (http://www.ip2state.com/map.asp?s=ip&city=-&lat=55.75&long=37.583&ses=960025810)

213.109.75.90 (http://www.ip2state.com/map.asp?s=ip&city=-&lat=55.75&long=37.583&ses=960025810)

If you do some investigating then you will find out that these IP addresses are run from somewhere in Russia and that it’s a MALWARE servlet!

Finally a solution perhaps?

Take a look at opendns online and get some “valid” DNS servers to rather have instead of those bogus bullcrap ip addresses and replace it?

If that didn’t work then perhaps this will?

Perform a hard-reset of your router, not sure how to do that? While your router is on press the “reset button” with a ballpoint pen or similar object that fits.
You will probably have to go in and enter all your settings again, so take note of them all before you do this!!!

I decided to take a look at it today and went and downloaded the developer sneak release.

It came all boxed up in a 764,994KB (764MB) VMDK Virtual Machine Harddisk file.
When it finished downloading I was sadly quite excited as I love trying out new Operating Systems and goodies – being a geeky kind of guy like most guys out there – and after hardly any setup at all it started up.

You login directly using your Google Account username and password.

Imagine only being able to run Google’s Chrome web browser and not have anything else happening on your computer.

I suppose this sounds really fantastic to people who don’t use a computer for anything other than browsing the web, or those who are on netbooks. I suppose it is a great way to utilize all the power of those poor little hardware slugs.
